Although Japanese acupuncture actually encompasses many different styles and schools, one particular style that is growing in popularity is that of Master Kiiko Matsumoto.
Kiiko Matsumoto apprenticed with some of the most renowned acupuncturists in Japan and has taken these experiences and combined them with her understanding of classical Chinese medicine and her years of clinical experience and synthesized them into a modern approach for successful treatment.
About Kiiko's style
A Kiiko's style practitioner addresses patient health issues from several levels. By examining factors that are often the root of a patient's symptoms, including past history, personal constitution, and any structural imbalances, the acupuncturist can treat in a more complete and lasting healing. This holistic approach gives a Kiiko-Style practitioner the capacity to help patients with complex issues.
One of the primary influences in the development of Kiiko Style acupuncture comes from Master Nagano who was a blind acupuncturist. Palpation of the hara, or abdomen, is the foundation of this method. Palpation is the ability to gain information through touch. This gives instant feedback as to the patient's condition of health.
There are a number of diagnostic areas called reflex zones that are located on the abdomen, back and neck. These reflexes directly correspond to imbalances in the body, for example a possible problem with the ovaries, the prostate, the thyroid, the digestive system, the kidneys, etcetera. They can reveal both chronic and acute problems.
Possible treatment points are tested first with finger pressure to see if this helps release reflexes that may be tight or uncomfortable indicating specific imbalances in the body. If there is significant change then a needle will be inserted, always in the same direction as the fingers were pressing. This immediate reaction confirms that the point chosen will be successful in treating the condition. So diagnosis and treatment are in effect one and the same, as diagnosis is only complete when treatment is shown to be effective.
What's Unique About Kiiko Style Acupuncture?
Japanese Tradition: Steeped in tradition - yet innovative
Holistic Approach: Addressing the entire person - to get at root causes of illness
Diverse Treatment Methods - tailored to the individual
Palpation: Feedback through touch - instantly
1) The practitioner using Kiiko Style acupuncture is part of a living tradition. The teachings of this system come directly from first-hand experience gained from some of Japan's greatest acupuncturists. Kiiko Matsumoto still travels to Japan to study with her masters. Because of this constant exposure to innovative techniques and new clinical insights, Kiiko Style acupuncture continuously develops methods designed to achieve maximum results when treating a patient. A living system of acupuncture must by definition reflect the changing needs of the era in which it is practised and incorporate the technological improvements at it's disposal. Also a living system continuously learns and deepens its understanding to provide a more complete treatment plan and clinical results.
2) Kiiko Style acupuncture offers a totally new way to look at patients. It combines classical Chinese medical principles with modern pathophysiology in a way that brings out the best in both. Often by seeing the patient's problem from this broader perspective, the practitioner can solve difficult cases.
3) Because of the diverse influences on Kiiko's Style of acupuncture from her years of studying with Japan's master acupuncturists, the practitioner of this style has a wide number of viable options from which to create an effective treatment plan for the individual needs of each patient. Needling methods are shallow and virtually painless, using the smallest gauge needles. But for those clients who do not want needles there are other treatment options available.
4) By using palpation to diagnose it means that the treatment is much more a direct experience of reality rather than a theoretical or intellectual approach. There is no more wondering week after week if the points chosen for their supposed actions will work for the original diagnosis that was made. In this system the acupuncturist treats "what they feel". If the reflex is not present, or if specific treatment points do not significantly change the reflex quality, then some other more viable treatment option will be found.
Both the acupuncturist and the patient have instant feedback as to how well the treatment is working.
