Frequently Asked Questions |

|---|---|---|
Is it Safe?Acupuncture is an extremely safe procedure, when performed by a fully-trained, qualified practitioner. All needles are pre-sterilised, single use and disposable, and all practitioners who are members of the British Acupuncture Council are fully trained in sterile needle technique.
Does it hurt?Japanese acupuncture needles are extremely thin and normally penetrate the skin with no pain at all. Some areas may be more sensitive and feel like a small pinch as the needle is inserted, but that lasts for less than a second. Once the needles are in place, there should be no pain.
Can Acupuncture be combined with other therapies?Yes, acupuncture can be performed alongside other holistic treatments, and at the same time as Western medical treatment. You should inform each practitioner if you are having any other treatments.
How many treatments will I need? This question is difficult to answer because everyone responds differently. Generally speaking, the longer a problem has existed, the longer it will take to correct. You will begin to notice an improvement after just a few sessions. You can then decide to have more treatments, as the benefits generally last longer and longer with repeated treatments. Contrast this with Western medicine, where the treatment usually becomes less effective over time and requires higher doses.
Do you have to believe in acupuncture for it to work?Whether you believe in acupuncture or not, it works as the body responds to treatment. Acupuncture is a science with 5,000 years' clinical experience. In fact, studies show that sceptics can experience some of the best results. In our experience, people don't stay sceptical for long. Animals have been shown to benefit from acupuncture, even sceptical ones!
