How does illness develop, from an oriental point of view?Illness or 'dis-ease', any discomfort or just feeling 'out of sorts' is basically a state of ill-health or lack of well-being. Many factors - emotional problems, overwork, poor diet - negatively affect our energy flow causing blocks and deficiencies, which eventually cause this ill-health. The body's reaction to disease or being out of balance manifests in symptoms, both physical and/or emotional such as pain, hormonal imbalances, allergies, gynecological problems, digestive disturbances, sleep difficulties, anxiety, depression, panic attacks... Even just stress can cause these same conditions. These days it is hard not to become even a little stressed about something or other, and many of us experience some degree of disharmony at some time in our lives often in such a subtle way that it is barely noticeable. If the root of these imbalances is not treated the diseased state progresses and worsens. With normal western treatment the original symptoms are suppressed but since the root of the problem has not been dealt with the disease will manifest itself with diferent symptoms. So how does acupunture work?Acupuncture, however, is based on the understanding that if we have a good quantity of vital energy, known as Qi or Ki, flowing freely through the body we can both prevent and treat ill-health. Fatigue and adrenal exhaustion for example can be the result of a lack of energy, whereas too much energy stuck in one area can cause pain or headaches. The energy flows along channels, or meridians, that connect to the internal organs of the body. Very fine needles are inserted into specific points along these channels just under the skin, where the energy can be accessed and moved to unblock areas of tension and tonify weaker areas. By rebalancing the body the root of the disease can be treated, as well as the symptoms. Many people enjoy regular acupuncture not because there is anything specifically wrong with them but for the prevention of illness. Acupuncture boosts the immune system and increases energy, so clients often find it a relaxing time to switch off from life's stresses and recharge their batteries.
